Comparison of Grafting Success Rate and Hearing Outcomes between Primary and Revision Tympanoplasties

Introduction: There are a few studies that compare the outcomes between primary and revision tympanoplasties. The purpose of the present study was to compare the results of type I tympanoplasty (i.e., synonymous to myringoplasty) and revision myringoplasty based on the closure of tympanic membrane perforation and hearing improvement. Materials and Methods: Thisprospective single-blind study was...

Hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty: how we do it

Dear Editor, Tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is most commonly a result of infection, trauma, or the sequelae of tympanostomy tube insertion. Although 88% of traumatic perforations of any size heal without intervention, the remainders become chronic and require treatment. Without closure, morbidity may include hearing loss, chronic otorrhea and cholesteatoma formation. These tympanic membrane...

Surgical Management of Myringosclerosis over an Entire Perforated Tympanic Membrane by Simple Underlay Myringoplasty

The aim of our study is to demonstrate the surgical management of myringosclerosis over a perforated whole tympanic membrane using simple underlay myringoplasty. Simple underlay myringoplasty with fibrin glue was performed in 11 ears with myringosclerosis over the entire tympanic membrane. The patients were one male and ten females and their mean age was 61.8 years (range, 40-73 yr). Surgical s...

Advantages of hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty over fat graft myringoplasty.

OBJECTIVES To compare hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty (HAFGM) with fat graft myringoplasty (FGM) on grade I tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs) (<25% of the tympanic membrane surface) and to assess 12-month postoperative hearing outcomes in a pediatric population. DESIGN Prospective study. SETTING Tertiary care pediatric center. PATIENTS Ninety-two children with a TMP were include...

Myringoplasty.

There is marked diversity in the reported success rates for achieving an intact tympanic membrane following myringoplasty. Controversy exists about the factors thought to influence surgical outcome. Both of these facts have important implications for obtaining informed consent prior to surgery. This study reviews the factors thought to determine the likelihood of achieving complete closure of t...
